Supported by IVCC through scientific advice, laboratory support and rigorous field trials, SumiShield® 50WG, developed by Sumitomo Chemical, offers a new Mode of Action (MOA) Active Ingredient (AI) for vector control.

Containing the active ingredient clothianidin, a neonicotinoid compound, SumiShield® 50WG is the first new MOA chemistry to be recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO) for use in Indoor Residual Spraying (IRS) in over 40 years. SumiShield® 50WG is designed as a single ingredient non-pyrethroid, making it an ideal product for rotational strategies in areas where pyrethroid Long Lasting Insecticidal Nets (LLINs) have been deployed.

The non-repellent formulation means that resting mosquitoes are exposed to SumiShield® 50WG for longer, which increases mortality and reduces the chances of resistance developing. Cross-resistance to clothianidin, the active ingredient of SumiShield® 50WG, has not been detected in laboratory strains or in field populations of insecticide resistant Anopheline mosquito vectors.

SumiShield® 50WG shows good residual efficacy on both mud and cement surfaces, achieving up to 8-9 months on both surface types, providing African malaria programmes with another affordable long-lasting insecticide to be used in rotation for resistance management.

Clothianidin provides an exceptionally good residual activity on all tested wall surfaces when compared to the residual activity of many other commercial insecticidal products used for IRS.

Use Case

Bio-efficacy and residual activity SumiShield® 50WG (50% w/w) was assessed using an insecticide-susceptible laboratory strain of Anopheles arabiensis in Lualaba Province, Democratic Republic of the Congo.

Contact surface bioassays were conducted on four types or walls (unbaked clay, baked clay, cement and painted cement) in simulated semi-field conditions. Additionally, two types of walls (painted cement and baked clay) were examined in occupied houses. Laboratory-reared An.arabiensis were exposed to treated or untreated surfaces (controls) for 30 minutes. Mortality was recorded at 24 hour intervals for 120 hours.

Results showed that SumiShield® 50WG applied at 300 mg ai/sq m on two house walls (baked clay or painted cement) performed equally well (> 80% mortality) on both surfaces up to week 41 (approximately 9.5 months), whilst up to 48 weeks residual activity was observed in semi field conditions.
